I was born in Caracas (Venezuela) and did my undergraduate studies in Medicine and Surgery there from 1997-2004. After graduating, I did one year of rural GP practice in Margarita Island and moved to Barcelona (Spain) in 2006 to carry out my postgraduate studies in Family and Community Medicine (General Practice) from 2007-2011. I worked there for 4 years before deciding to come to New Zealand with my partner in 2015 and became a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of GP's in 2021.
We arrived in Southland and lived in Invercargill for 9 years, but felt it was the right time to move to Cambridge as we'd spent some time in the Waikato with friends and family over the years. My partner is an electrician and we have 2 adorable fur babies.
I love General Practice in all its scope, but have special interests in the integrative management of chronic health conditions, as well as minority healthcare particularly in the areas of gender-affirming healthcare and with minority ethnic communities. I also regularly use dermatoscopy in the review of skin lesions and am adept at performing minor surgical procedures when these are required.
In my spare time - and coming from a very multicultural background - I am very passionate about books, music and languages. I am involved in the psychological field of meaning-centered therapy (the Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy) as developed by Dr Viktor Frankl and its applications in daily life. I am also an enthusiastic learner of Te Reo Māori through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. I played lacrosse briefly while living in Spain and am keen to pick this up once again, as well as rowing and tramping throughout New Zealand.
It is my sincere hope to be able to get to know my patients and their whānau and develop a close bond that will allow me to provide them with the best care possible in a trustful and respectful setting.
